Tap ‘er Light is Done

The brand new publisher of the Montana Standard has spoken and Bill Foley has apparently been told that his column Tap ‘er Light is finished because it’s “dividing the community” so it’s gone. This is supposedly after meeting with the Leipheimer family.

Outdoorsman Marquee Disssing the Montana Standard

Personally, I can’t believe there is this much controversy from either side. I’m a very diplomatic, anti-confrontation person, and I have a very live-and-let-live philosophy so the whole thing baffles me. Plus, I can probably count the number of times I’ve read something in the sports section on one hand, so I’m probably the wrong person for this post.

I did dig up the offending column (from July 4) on the Montana Standard’s website and I found the response from the Leipheimer family in Our Readers Speak (from July 9) and both seem fairly innocuous to me. Maybe I’m just naive.

I certainly don’t see any reason to kill a column entirely over it. I believe strongly in the freedom of the press, but I also think that a column in a daily newspaper is something that needs to be handled with reverence. After reading that column, I think it was.

I’ll let you guys in on a little secret–most of the time I love Butte. But sometimes I don’t. We are certainly capable of taking something small and blowing it way out of proportion here in the Mining City, aren’t we?

Anyway, what’s your stance?

Is the community really divided? Do you, like so many, think that Levi has done Butte wrong by not shouting the word Butte from the rooftops and ESPN every chance he gets? Do you think the Standard has done the right thing by ending Tap ‘er Light? Do you think that the whole thing is being blown WAY out of proportion? Do you think it is a sign of the times that a big name can have a big influence over the press?

Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Sorry we haven’t been blogging too much lately. I’ve been out of town and Delaney hasn’t been feeling very “bloggy” I guess I have to do everything around here.

So in case you didn’t know, Butte and the Berkeley Pit were the topic of a segment on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t worry. Someone put it on YouTube, and here’s your chance.

Personally, I think Butte should be honored to be made fun of and we are already well practiced at making lemonade out of lemons so here’s another opportunity to do just that. Besides, it really is funny. Fritz Daily did a great job, too. He’s a good advocate for Butte.

We’ll be back with more Butte-related posts soon. Sorry for the unintentional hiatus.

Butte’s Fisher Radio Stations Being Sold

Fisher Communications announced recently that they will sell 24 small market radio stations in Montana and Washington. That figure includes three Butte stations: KMBR (95.5 FM), KAAR (92.5 FM), and KXTL (1370 AM).

These and other Fisher stations are being purchased by Cherry Creek Radio, LLC out of Denver.

We’ll have to see what happens as far as changes for Butte’s stations – maybe nothing. Hopefully, this will be a good thing. — But won’t we all miss those uplifting Fisher tones after the Station ID at the top of the hour?! :-)

Butte Kids Can Try Out for TV Show

Casting reps from the Discovery Kids show Endurance will be in the Mining City tomorrow, trying to find the next big star of their reality show.

Endurance, which airs locally on KTVM Saturday mornings, is kind of like a mini-Survivor without all the starving and nakedness.

Twenty kids are sent off to a remote destination to spend two weeks competing in a series of tough challenges that test your strength, stamina and strategy. The kids will be divided into teams of two to compete in two types of games. In the Endurance Missions, physical endurance and mental strategy are tested as kids accumulate pyramid pieces to complete the 12-piece “Pyramid of Endurance.” Teams who win the mind-bending Temple Missions earn ultimate control and choose which team to send home. The last team standing will win the trip of a lifetime!

Tina Buckinham will be at the Butte Plaza Mall Friday from 3-5 p.m. in the open area outside JC Penney and the old Stage store. Kids between 12 and 15 are invited to this open casting call. They’re asked to bring a photo and a parent.

Bye Bye, Roun’town Review

Butte’s sure going to miss the Roun’town Review as they call it quits after 12 years. Jack Hanley has always been a tireless supporter of the Butte community and has always worked hard to present Butte with positive news, which in Butte is not always easy – especially over the years of the Roun’town’s tenure.

Jack, thanks for all of your hard work! Enjoy your retirement! If you ever have something to say, send it on in to us and we’ll happily post it.

Get the scoop.
